I am having an issue while adding a bounce email address (as I am not currently using the built-in MailPoet service for sending emails, but my own domain’s host instead).

The problem: I’ve confirmed the domain (let’s say it’s mydomain.com), added all the necessary DNS records (CNAME, TXT, SPF record), set up the default sender as [email protected], set up the host with the same email and its corresponding password. I am able to send a test email; I am getting the subscription confirmation emails when I test my subscription forms by entering an email address I can check and confirm.

Since I’m not using the MailPoet host, I thought I could add an email where I can receive notifications if an email bounces. It’s recommended to use an email on the same domain, so I thought I’d use [email protected]. However, as soon as I enter this address (which I tested and it receives emails) and click “Save”, I can no longer send test emails (previews of a newsletter) to any address, and I get this error:

The following From address failed: [email protected] : MAIL FROM command failed,Sender address rejected: not owned by auth user. 1664689522-cUsDOBtDeS-jMjiZjbh ,553,5.7.1SMTP server error: MAIL FROM command failed Detail: Sender address rejected: not owned by auth user. 1664689522-cUsDOBtDeS-jMjiZjbh SMTP code: 553 Additional SMTP info: 5.7.1

As soon as I remove that address from the bounce email field and save, I can send the test emails and receive subscription confirmations again. Adding [email protected] causes the same error.

Could you please help me resolve this?

    Hello @rainscience ,

Thank you for contacting MailPoet support. I will be happy to help you with this.

This seems to be related to an authentication error.

This might mean that SMTP authentication has not been enabled in your email program. You’ll need to enable SMTP authentication in order to be able to send emails.”

I’d suggest you reach out to your email hosting service about this and let them know. They should be able to help you with this.

You can also check if you have an option similar or equal to “Allow sending emails from other users within your domain name” and turn it on.

Let us know if this helps.

    Have a great day

I’m not even sure what this means. I’ve created several email addresses that are identical in settings. I can send emails to these addresses, I can receive emails sent to these addresses.

I don’t quite understand how adding a bounce address which will only be receiving emails relates to SMTP authentication.

    Hey again @rainscience

I’m not even sure what this means. I’ve created several email addresses that are identical in settings. I can send emails to these addresses, I can receive emails sent to these addresses.

This is due to how the setting works, as the address is basically a forwarding address (and so it’s the to and from email address).

Make sure that SMTP authentication is configured within your host to allow this.
