Getting the Styles Tutorial to work

I’m trying to work through your “Styles” tutorial. Before making ANY changes I thought it would be useful to simply create a working version of what you guys wrote, so I could make incremental changes and see how they worked So, following instructions, I created a mu-plugins directory and the em-styles.php file. I then systematically went through all of the steps of the tutorial, copying and pasting the code snippets, without making ANY changes.
I did note there were a few places where you discuss snippets that are part of previously listed code. I’m quite sure that 1) I ignored all of those, and 2) every piece of code that you provide is in my file.
However it doesn’t work and crashes my localhost site, with a white screen.
So, two obvious questions:
1) What did you leave out? Is there a header or some additional code I need to add to what’s listed in the tutorial to actually make it work?
2) Do you have a file that actually implements the tutorial in a way that you can simply copy into the mu-plugins folder and have it work?
