Getting verified on Google Webmaster Tools

  • Have been trying to do this to get my site verified so I can set up a sitemap. So far, I have tried the HTML method but cannot figure out how to get it uploaded to the site-WHERE?!? How??
    Have also tried the alternative method of adding an HTML meta tag but I cannot find the definitive place to insert the code. Help! I am totally new to this and not techie at all and know nothing really about codes and the only reason I was willing to try this was because it actually gave an example of where to put it but this place does not exist on my home page.

    Grab your FTP credentials from your webhost, download FileZilla, use it to upload the file to the wordpress install root directory.

    You could simply edit the header.php file of your theme, put the code just before the closing </head> tag…

    Two notes for part 2 of above:

    1. When directly modifying theme files in the editor a backup should be taken first, if you err, you could cause site issues.
    2. Also, changing these files is not recommended as direct edits to a parent theme are lost on theme update…please consider using a Child Theme.
