• Customer has been uploading media for some time, but they’ve been uploading “off the camera” photos that are rather large. We now have a media library that is 18GB+ in filesize.

Is there a plugin or technique that exists which will allow me to web-optimize the photos as a batch or something? I’m aware of “WP Smush.it” and “EWWW Image Optimizer”, but to my knowledge, only optimize what is output to the browser.

Right now, we have a “client is unfairly utilizing disk space” issue for the server they’re on. Wondering if there’s something that can be done in this regard.

explore use of a CDN (content delivery network)
there is one available in jetpack plugin (photon)
various hosting companies offer CDN as option

    Thanks contentiskey!

I have considered a CDN, but the issue is less about how the files are served, and more about the fact that there is a ridiculously large amount of files being stored on the disk in question. It could mean we move them to a dedicated environment, but really…eventually as it grows it will become more of an issue.

It’s my understanding that there are CDN synchronization plugins which will sync your files to a CDN to be served, but in my experience, those source files remain on the hosting disk with the WordPress installation.

Unless there’s a way to “completely” and permanently offload media to Amazon S3 or something? That would certainly do the trick!

I’m looking for a plugin that will pop-up a text box with a person’s name when I hover over their face in a photo on my site. I don’t want to write html, I just want the plug in to work like NextGEN Gallery’s title that pops up with the image when one selects an image, only I want to do it for each face in a group photo. Any suggestions, other than ‘LEARN HTML’?

here are 2 other resources about optimizing your images (however, some of the actions are recommended before loading into the WP media library)

I have never tried using S3 for images but here is an article referring to the topic Amazon S3 As Image Hosting
