Give each post a number, chronologically, latest post highest number

Each post had an ID. Would it be enough to display that?
id="post-<?php the_ID(); ?>">
Something like that as meta tag.

Just tried it, it gives a number, but the counting makes jumps, it doesn’t go like 1,2,3,4,5 but 1,4,7,13,14 etc.. so it looks quite messy and random.

tried it, but doesn’t work, not with the theme i’m using at least. And the counting has to be ascending, instead of descending…

your reference site isn’t a blog site.

I know, NOTCOT is built on different platform. But that doesn’t mean a similar feature would be impossible to implement in WordPress i think, altough i don’t have the programming skills to figure it out. So that’s why I asked here…

Yes, autosave-drafts get an ID, you can disable that.
