Giveaway variation selected not working

I created a Bogo coupon for a variable product. After adding the product and visiting the cart page you are given the option to select the variation for the free product. No matter which variation you choose in the cart, it will only add the 1st variation of the product.

The product under the Usage Restriction and under the Giveaway products section are set to use the same main product and not one of the variations. Is there another setting that needs to be selected
