• Hi Chris (and anyone who can assist),

I’ve been experiencing a dilemma with GN displaying featured images for while and keeping an eye on this forum for potential solutions.

Instead of using the featured image, GN displays the first image in the story. I tried changing the featured image dimensions and experimented with both PNG and JPG. Nothing has worked so far.

Here is an example of a feed (a subcategory) that I’m using: https://tailtalez.com/category/talez/cats/feed/gn

GN won’t even publish the parent category:
    https://tailtalez.com/category/talez/feed/gn

I’m experiencing the exact same dilemma with another one of my sites that uses the same theme (Trellis), so I really hope this isn’t a theme-specific problem.

I know GN is buggy, but there are other sites in my niche that are still producing functional feeds such as this one:
    https://news.google.com/publications/CAAqBwgKMLb3mAswxoGxAw?ceid=US:en&oc=3

If you have any suggestions, I’d greatly appreciate it!

  • Hi Nkshadi,

GN Publisher is set up to display the featured image, as set in the WP backend/create-post page, directly after this in the rss feed:

for some reason, the featured image isn’t being included there, or anywhere else, in your feed.

When you set up your featured image, are you using the ‘featured image’ > ‘set featured image’ on the create-post page, or are you using a different method to create a post or add a featured image?

Also, you said that https://tailtalez.com/category/talez/feed/gn isn’t publishing. The feed itself looks to be working correctly (other than not including the featured image). What are you experiencing?

    Hi Chris,

Thank you for your prompt response.

I set up the featured image simply by uploading an image to the designated “featured image” spot on the post creation page.

Pardon my ignorance, but I can’t locate the featured image code in the code editor (as opposed to visual editor) to find where it would say
during post creation.

In regards to https://tailtalez.com/category/talez/feed/gn not publishing, GN is classifying it as an empty section.

Update: I modified my theme settings NOT to show featured images on posts so I can manually upload the featured image to show after the title (in the body text) since GN seems to be pulling images from the body text.

I haven’t observed any changes thus far, but will wait a few hours and see what happens. Wanted to give you a heads up in case you viewed the website and noticed the change.

Sorry for the confusion, you would find:

in the actual rss feed. For example, if you go to:

    https://tailtalez.com/category/talez/feed/gn

and search for that text, you will now see that a little more code and the url for your featured image is there now. So… something you changed affected it, because before that image url wasn’t there.

Now, just to complicate things a bit ?? Google News won’t automatically update the individual articles in your Publication, so even though the feed is working, it probably won’t show the featured image in your current posts, but for new posts the image should be included.

And… hmmm… you have a tag appearing in an odd place in the rss feed. That’s normally not there and is causing your feed to no validate when tested.

    It starts like this:

    body #gform_wrapper_1 .gform_heading .gform_title {text-align:center;}body #gform_wrapper_1…

Do you know what is generating that code? Then look through the settings of whatever is generating it to see if there is an option to not include it in feeds,

    Chris
