Sigh!

I have been trying to submit my news blog to Google News Publisher for a week and I’ve followed GN Publisher’s guide to setting up my feeds but for some reason, they are NOT fetching.

W3 Validator approves all of my feeds as valid. Google pings after every article I publish and the Feedfetcher-Google bot records its fetches.

I even contacted my web host asking them to whitelist the bot and they confirmed that they weren’t blocking anything.

Still for some odd reason, Publisher Centre can’t seem to fetch the feeds so I can complete my submission.

I noticed this problem persisted after my publication was rejected for the following reason:

“The name that you provided for your publication does not match the name on your site. Please review and align the name so that users can easily discover your content.”

Basically, I was rejected because my site’s footer reads “Swisher Post News” and in my submission, I had committed the “News”.

Ever since this outcome, I have been struggling to get my submission through.

Can you help?

Hi Andilesp,

Looking at https://swisherpost.co.za/feed/gn/, I can confirm that feed is working correctly and that Google’s bot is able to reach it.

What feed urls do you have set up in the Publisher Center?

Okay, Google is trying to fetch your feeds, but it’s getting a 406 error on the page header.

You can see the results of the attempt here:

If I try the feed url in my browser, it works fine, gives me a 200 code, meaning all is well.

When Google’s rss crawler, Feedfetcher, tries to access the url, the header on the page gives a 406 (unacceptable) error.

I’m afraid I’m going to have to send you back to your hosting company for a fix. There’s nothing I can do through the plugin to change anything. It might still be something with their firewall or… I’m not sure what.

But if you tell them that when the Feedfetcher bot from Google tries to access the feed, the header gives it a 406 error, maybe they can take it from there and figure out what they need to adjust. More information about Feedfetcher is here: https://www.google.com/feedfetcher.html
