• hi folks – I know this site must look really basic. I’m a total beginner with no knowledge of coding etc and I only got up and running yesterday. I’m actually more after some advice on it’s structure than anything at the moment.

Firstly, I like the default theme… but is there any way that I can change the white background in the main body.. and text colour? Also, I’d like to have boxes around the blog entries… do I need to tinker with the CSS code to achieve all this? Ultimately I might like to incorporate a few sponsor banners.. again, how would I slot these in? Is it possibly to use a Flash header banner?

Secondly, I’d like to restrict access to some pages to subscribers only… is there a way to achieve this or do I need to download a widget(?) and if so, which one?

Thirdly, taking the page as an example, how do I change the thumbnails so they aren’t cropped into a square format? I’ve tried for ages and can’t get it to change. Also, the page that results from clicking one of those thumbnails… is there any way to insert images onto that page? they don’t seem to be listed anywhere for editing?

Other than that, I’m really pleased so far… only another several hundred images to upload and then I can start to think about the blog itself! ??

thats oddd. the links didn’t work in that post… it’s

    https://www.digital-reefs.com

and the example page I was wondering about is

    https://www.digital-reefs.com/?page_id=192

To restrict access to members only you could use the following plugin: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/members-only/

I can help you with the other stuff. If you want I can answer this in the form of a video on my video blog: https://socialmediaglue.com. This way you can visually see what the heck is going on with all of the code, etc.

    Hope I’ve been helpful.

    thanks Jason.

Excellent. I think I understand the principle behind adding the plugin…. just wondering how I upload a folder in its entirity though? I’m using CPanel to administer the site….

The videoblog sounds great for the other questions.. I’d really appreciate that. I assume that there must be a section of code for the current template that could easily be changed, simply replacing the colour code… but I don’t know where it is. I’m doing a bit of reading about child themes but I’m not sure I understand the process of setting this up on my webspace.

If there’s any way to tinker with those end pages to allow extra images to be added, I’d also love that. These pages have a code (for example: https://www.digital-reefs.com/?attachment_id=196 ) but they aren’t listed in the pages hierarchy. Is this beciase they are generated by an image gallery?

Another issue I’m having… I don’t seem to be able to log-in to the site even though my password is correct and accepted. Any ideas?

I’ll get going with the video review right now. You’ll actually be my first one ?? I’ll do that right now. If you don’t mind just filling out the form on the right side of the page so I have an email that I can use to let you know when the video is up.

I actually finished the video on Sat. and I took it in too high def. and Vimeo started to crap out on me during the upload process. I saw that you updated the #Wrapper in the CSS and added the member restriction. This looks very good.

Do you have any other questions I can help you with? I can do the video review and answer them. This time I will make sure I record it right ??

Cheers Jason – sorry I’ve been busy tinkering as you can see!

I’ve made a few more changes now and I’m pretty happy with the overall look now (I think the white area is OK as it makes it look uncluttered).

    I do have a couple more questions…

Firstly, RSS feeds, Atom etc…. I don’t understand what these actually do? Do they take sinfo from other sites and display it on my blog, or do they allow people to sign up to get notifications of new material that I post?

Ads – can I insert banners around my site easily? I’ve been reading about Google Adsense and it doesn’t make much sense to me (excuse the bad pun). I’m more interested in banners from advertisers selected by me really.

Finally… these facebook and twitter buttons that everyone seems to have… what do they actually do? what is the potential there?
