After months, and many support calls/chats to Godaddy because of file usage issues, which made it impossible at times to login to any of the 5 wordpress sites on that account, today the agent concluded it was the UpdraftPlus plugin. Actually, they said “From last few weeks it is been blocked and we haven’t notified you because there no such files which causing network violation.” I’ve used this plugin for years, and on other hosts with no issues, so I don’t know what’s changed, but it was happening mostly on Friday and Saturday when multiple sites were scheduled to be backed up. I’ve set them to manual, and will watch file file usage to see if it changes. The usage would go from about 160,000 to over 250,000 which is the limit for the account. Mind you, the backups are stored offsite, so only be while the backup was running. They didn’t seem to run at the same time, so mostly they rarely failed. I don’t know, maybe it’s the plugin, maybe it’s not, but I thought you should know. They’re supposed to be sending more information – I’ll see if they come through on that.

I should mention, the account was recently migrated from MediaTemple, on which we had the same problem, and they didn’t notify us in any way. Since I wrote the above, I see that others have had problems with godaddy for months. I could have saved myself a lot of angst if I’d known that. Are there any other hosts blocking it? This account is moving to another host because of this issue, and the lack of adequate support on godaddy.

Can you let us know which version number you are using?

I know it was up-to-date, but I can’t tell you what version as I ended up deleting the plugin off the sites, to see if that’s what was indeed the issue. Although the File Usage did go down, it was back up this morning, over the limit. Godaddy insists it’s not a server issue, but would/could not tell me how over 50,000 files were generated overnight. They’re having Sucuri scan it, although the status said they were ok. I’m baffled. As soon as I can, I’m moving the sites to another host, and may then re-install your plugin, as I’m having no trouble with it on other hosts. Luckily I have the offsite backups in case I have trouble migrating to the other host.

Thank you for getting back to me. If you continue to experience any issues please let us know as we would definitely want to be looking into any issues like this.

I received a message from the godaddy security as I had requested a scan. Interestingly, there they are saying it was w3-total-cache that was causing the file usage to max out. It seems to me that someone was guessing, I’m not sure who. I suspect it may even have been the security system, as I deleted it from the sites as I migrated them to the new host, and the usage went down. I don’t know, maybe it was some weird combination of stuff. In any case, I have re-installed UpdraftPlus on the sites on the new host, and am hoping they will work fine there, as they used to on the old host, and on every other site I’ve used it on. I didn’t even have to re-enter the settings, it was all there.

Unfortunately some hosting providers are like this. Do let us know if you experience any issues at all. We are here to help and we would want to know if the plugin was causing resource issues

I backed up each of the 5 sites, all successful, all very fast! On a couple I had the split set much lower on the old host. On the new one, I put all 5 sites back up to 400MB with no problems, and the largest site, which had taken 77 files, is now down to 18!!! Wish I’d switched hosts months ago!

Good hosting can make the world of difference!
