Good plugin but needs improvement
-
At the outset, This is a very good plugin. I never have written a review but I feel this plugin deserves one.
I have an e-commerce site which has 3.6 GB worth of images. I wanted to create a copy for my development purposes under a subdomain of my main domain. Every other plugin including the duplicators failed to copy my site because they all tried to create an archive file (one big blob of all data) with huge size and long running scripts. While that approach has its pros, it doesn’t work in my scenario ending with time out (504) with the shared hosting plan. Increasing memory is not an option with my package. This plugin with its incremental approach did the transfer flawlessly. Kudos to the developers.
I did however, have some qualms about this plugin. We have to do few things after we create a copy with this plugin.
a. The staging is under a sub-folder. So if you wish to work on your staging site, you’ll need to create a sub-domain for that folder in order not to share the sessions and reach the main site by mistake (which the plugin warns you BTW).
b. You’ll need to run wpmigratedb plugin (or similar) to change the GUID and references of the main site to the sub-domain. This plugin does not change them though I remember seeing the code for doing that, may it is only for changing the site name in the config.
c. I wanted to push the staging to a new db but I found no option in the settings or during the cloning process to set that up. I had to move them manually and change the db assignments in the config. However, I did see the function for that in the plugin, just the options missing. May be planned for future? This plugin will be unbeatable if the above issues are addressed.
