I’m getting the “Google Drive won’t authenticate” message. I have one site backing up to this Google Drive account – with no issues. I am trying to have a different site backup in the same account.

I have followed the tutorial, created a new Project, project name, new client ID …the WP panel shows an “invalid_client” error and I am unable to authenticate. I have a new Client ID and Secret than the other site, so those are also different.

Is it not possible to back up two sites to the same account?

    thanks

    Hi,

What is the complete text of the error?

Yes, backing up multiple sites to one Google account is no problem. But they should be in separate projects. But this is not the cause of the error – the error comes from Google’s end, and means that Google does not recognise the thing that you’ve entered as the client ID as a client ID that also exists in your Google account.

    David,

Thanks for the quick reply. I created a new project and followed the steps correctly (at least as far as I can see). I use your plugin on numerous sites, but this is the only one with 2 sites backing up to the same Google Drive account. I have many sites backing up to Dropbox and no problems there. The full error is:
    – – –
No refresh token was received from Google. This often means that you entered your client secret wrongly, or that you have not yet re-authenticated (below) since correcting it. Re-check it, then follow the link to authenticate again. Finally, if that does not work, then use expert mode to wipe all your settings, create a new Google client ID/secret, and start again. Error: invalid_client
    – – –

I also, after a few tries and double checking, did wipe the settings clean and started again – even created a new project again, but got the same results. I definitely am not entering anything wrong, so that shouldn’t be the issue.

I’ve spent a few hours on this, double checking and researching online. Not sure if I should give up at this point and look for another Google Drive backup plugin, although I really like Updraft. !

    Hi,

As I say, the error comes from Google’s end – they don’t think you have entered your client ID correctly. If you think you really really have, then the only thing to do is to ask Google for support… though, in all the cases I’ve seen before where the user was absolutely convinced they’d done it rightly, they later came back and said they hadn’t after all… just saying!

Yep, I hear you on that. I’ve done it enough I can’t see missing something, but I’ll give it another shot. thanks-

I’m having the same problem. I understand about being mistaken about entering codes correctly – but I’ve tried this on three sites now. I’m simply copy and pasting the Client ID and Client Secret and yet it still will not work.

Here is the text of the complete error…

No refresh token was received from Google. This often means that you entered your client secret wrongly, or that you have not yet re-authenticated (below) since correcting it. BTW, I don’t see anything in expert mode to wipe all settings.

Aha. Turns out you have TWO areas called Expert Settings and wipe is in the Debugging/Expert Tools tabs.

@delawaregrad: I just had a customer who hadn’t spotted that he’d accidentally got an extra space before the client ID in his UpdraftPlus Google Drive settings. So, try that – maybe you had the same issue.

Meanwhile, I shall tweak the next UD release to strip out any extra spaces – every little helps!

My fix was weird. There was no extra spaces ( I did check that many times!), but I had been cutting and pasting the code in. For some reason, I typed each character in and … that worked the first time.

Does that make any sense? No cutting & pasting in Firefox?

I think it’s basically the same issue – a white-space character when you cut/paste. White-space characters can include line-feeds, so it could have been one of those; they’re invisible when you look at the field, but they’re in there, mucking things up.

The next version will automatically strip these, as it seems it’s hit more than one person!

Have followed all suggestions for fixing “No refresh token was received from Google. ” to no avail.
Do not believe that I’m making typo errors
Have gone and reset plugin ->debugging/expert tools.
Have created a number of different web clients in google developers dashboard.

In the end nothing corrects issue.

@mecom: Please post a fresh thread: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Forum_Welcome#Where_To_Post . This one has been marked resolved by the original poster, and he won’t want to get email notifications of other users’ posts.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I’ve read reams of available information on this issue, unfortunately no useful answers, no useful information to lead to answers.

As an example, have you ever tried following your own link?
: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Forum_Welcome#Where_To_Post great page, but for someone who is just starting, it does not give me the answer “where to post” no hint as to how to start the new thread. Maybe I’m just getting blind and dense.

Eventually found “What exactly are you looking for and where do you want to start a thread? There’s an “Add New” button right next to “Requests and Feedback” on the WordPress ? Support ? Requests and Feedback page. “

Unfortunatly no clue as to which forum to post in, plugins and hacks or ???
For someone that seems to want to help, you have answered 1000’s of questions, sending a generic link was not helpful..

    Thanks for at least answering.

    Hi,

To post in the forum of a particular WordPress plugin, do this:

    1) Go to the plugin’s page (e.g. https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/updraftplus )

    2) Click on the “Support” tab

    3) The forum will then display. The box for posting a new thread is at the bottom.
