• Hi! I have been trying to embed a Google Form into a page on my website using custom HTML but it continues to only show as “Loading…” when I publish the page. I have been using the embed HTML that comes from the Google Form “send” tab. Also, my institution’s IT support has not been able to figure out the problem. The problem is under the website’s “Contact Us” page.

I am using the only embed html code that is on google forms. Is there something else I should be looking for?

When I paste the html, it embeds properly as a preview, but it does not stay that way when I preview the entire page or publish it. So it works but only briefly.

I have embedded a form that is outside of my organization and my institution’s IT department has also tried, so it is not a problem with only being able to access the form within my institution.

    Thank you!

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • Agreed Steven.
Personally, I use Everest Forms on my websites. But, without reCAPTCHA it’s a spam fest.

I used HappyForms, Jetpack Forms & Form Builder by 10web in the past.

Those 4 I had a lot of positive experiences with and I think are fine plugins at the moment of writing this comment.

Edit: About EverstForms. Ever since I linked it to a reCAPTCHA service… The spam melted like snow before the sun.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions. My understanding is that my institution chose not to give access to the WP embedded plugins but we do have access to Qualtrics and O365. In that case I will try another one because Google seems not to be working at all.
    Thanks again!

Sidenote and tip: Speaking out of experience as an IT admin for two art schools here… Depending on how you want the output of your form to go… If it needs processing into Excel and such… Office 365 Forms & Microsoft Flow is powerful! We use it for part of our intake process. There is a lot you can do with it but it’s a LOT of stuff to set up and such.

But if it’s a simple contact form, please use a form plugin. It’ll save you a lot of headaches. @amyw963

Thank you for the advice! I will let my institution’s IT admin know. I would also prefer a plugin for a simple contact form so I will check if it’s possible here.

Then the plugins that Steven linked or the ones I talked about in the first post on this page are your safest bets

Hi everyone – thanks for your input so far. I’m the server admin for our multi-site WordPress install at the university (I’m not a WordPress expert by any means).

The issue I think is a bit more complicated than headers or things. Google provides form embed code as an iframe, and that works fine (see https://pcfens.pages.wm.edu/sample-page/).

The issue starts if I open that sample page again in the editor and re-save it with the HTML block in preview mode (as opposed to HTML mode). Since the iframe embed code displays “Loading…” as the alternative text, that’s previewed in Gutenberg and is then saved instead of the original HTML.

For example, the HTML embed for the example above is
    <iframe src="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScAu-RnBSXZ6FSWo4DXt509Ma8mJJYnjFp2CGGUKxExCs3cXw/viewform?embedded=true" width="640" height="382" frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0">Loading…</iframe>

A quick fix seems to be leaving the HTML block in HTML mode instead of preview, but a large number of users seem to prefer the preview mode for the block since it usually presents a more accurate view of the page they’re building.

As a fellow IT admin for education @pcfens , in this scenario my thought process would be: “the headmaster wants a working website, so if there is a quick fix that inconvenienced the visual presentation of the editor a little bit… Then I wouldn’t mind that.”

But, I get it. I have a co-worker who helps me maintain our school’s websites and he would prefer it too. And trying to “fool” them with the page preview might not always do the trick.

I’d either explain them how the quick fix works OR go to a form plugin. That way they can also build the form inside WP and have the same or a similar editor. Plus, everything stays in the same database which can aid you when GDPR issues arise.

That’s why for the contact forms on my schoolwebsite https://lucasgent.be/contact, I chose a form plugin over a MS Forms or Google Forms.

But that’s my opinion and philosophy. I think it would save you more time to do one of those two things then trying to debug why the preview messes things up. Yet, I understand and respect everybody makes websites their own way.
