• Good Morning WordPress Friends! I discovered this morning that Google has stopped indexing my website correctly.

    My website is: https://www.News.sc

And if you do a search for one of the stories on Google it will come up with the correct title and description but when you click on it, the link only goes to the home page and not the post itself.

    Here’s an example: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&channel=s&hl=en&source=hp&q=South+Carolina+Bill%3A+Use+Drugs-NO+Benefits!&btnG=Google+Search

Click on the one for “News.sc”

Whats strange is that we’ve had this site up for months now, Since September and have had no problems. Any posts made before Jan. 6, 2010 are indexed correctly in google with the title, description and a direct link to the post itself.

As far as SEO type plugins that we are using on the site, we are using All-in-One SEO and the Google XML sitemap generator.

I looked at the XML file and the links are all being generated correctly and sent to google, and no settings have been changed on the site itself outside of adding the “Tan-Tan Amazon S3” plugin, but I don’t think that would interfere with google’s indexing?

  • Hello.

It’s not that unusual for the homepage to outrank the Permalink page when the two contain very similar information.

The only real problem I can see is that your site seems really quite slow. So Google might’ve, just possibly, managed to grab the homepage pretty quickly but had problems indexing the Permalink page quite as fast. Try signing up for Google Webmaster Tools account see what sort of crawl stats you’ve got.

Really, really, great domain name by the way. ??

Thanks for the reply Alism, I’ll register for their tools account and see if I can’t find out whats going on.

Its not normally so slow but we’re battling a few popular posts that ended up on Reddit and Digg today, They didn’t make the front page but their still getting pretty popular.

It is a cool domain name ??

Hmm, no crawl errors have been reported, and the crawl stats seem okay to me? about 19 new pages are crawled per day its reporting which is about right.

Whats strange is that if I go back in time to December 2009 and before the posts are all indexed correctly, I don’t know what could have changed Google’s indexing to make such a drastic difference. I haven’t changed anything on the site ( no new plugins, configs, code, etc)

I’m using an older version of the XML google sitemap plugin, maybe that could be causing problems?

The site is getting indexed really really quickly, A story we just posted about 4 hours ago is already on google, just with the wrong title and link ??

I’ve found out it helps if you go to WebmasterTools/Site Configuration/Settings and turn up the crawl rate….

It’s not real time reporting, so might still be catching up a bit. Was thinking the slowness might have been an ongoing thing initially, rather than the digg effect.

Like I say, I can’t see any other real problem? This seems fine?

The ones that end up on google news are correctly indexed, Check out result #3 on this link:

    https://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&rlz=1C1GGLS_en-GBGB362&q=%22Temperatures+Go+Down%2C+Rates+Go+UP%22&btnG=Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=

Its like its pulling the home page title, and pairing it with the post description and then just sticking a link to the home page.

Google must be getting lazy with our site or something ??

As a user, I don’t have a problem with that particular example.

The very first link with the ‘rate watch’ image goes to exactly the right page. I don’t think it’d entirely make sense to have another link to the same story a bit further down would it? I’d rather the second link wasn’t there at all than just be a duplicate of the first.

True true, I know I’d personally click on the one with the picture first and then failing that I’d always just click on the first result.

I guess I’m just going to have to wait and see if this is just some sort of weird glitch in how google is indexing things and see if things get better next week…

    I appreciate all ya’lls help today ??

I am having a similar problem, only I have redesigned a website for a client, so basically it is a new wordpress site (used to be plain html). The old site ranked at the top of a google search, but since the change, google cannot even find it. I have verified it, added the sitemap and added url in google Tools, as well as keywords and description in the header file. Still, google cannot find it. The site is https://surfschool.no so I am wondering is it just time that is an issue (ie need patience), or is there anything else I have overlooked?
