Hi, I’m stumped about an issue and was wondering if anyone has seen this before:

I have a WordPress site with a few hundred articles, and in Google Search Console, it appears that Google is somehow finding/crawling hundreds of other URLs which are essentially incomplete/shorter URLs that redirect to the real article URL.

For example, if I have a blog post that is:

mysite.com/cookie-recipes-gluten-free/

Then in Google Search Console, I’d also see one of the following:

mysite.com/cookie-

Or:

mysite.com/cookie

Or:

mysite.com/cookie-recipes-gluten

The shorter URL is not indexed. It’s listed as “page with redirect”, because they redirect to the full, correct URL.

And I’ve got a few hundred of them.

I just don’t understand how Google is finding these and crawling them to begin with.

My sitemap looks okay. I just checked, and only see real, full URLs listed there.

I have not seen anything like this before. My guess is that some plugin is using these short URLs in the frontend. So they should show up in the HTML code. The GoogleBot sees them and so they end up in the Search Console.

Therefore, check the HTML code of your page. Best with a concrete example as you have already mentioned here.

I went to the URL and clicked “view page source” in Chrome. I don’t see the shortened/incorrect URL referenced anywhere. Just the full, correct URL mentioned a few times throughout the page source code.

In GSC, if you click on such a link, you can inspect the details, such as where Google found the URL (under Discovery, often the referring page). To learn more, see https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/9012289?hl=en.

This may work. I resubmitted my validation to GSC.

I also tried the partial URLs after taking the steps in that article and they are now redirecting to a 404 (as they should).
