    Hi.
I respect that this is most likely not a WP issue.

As you can see the above site uses http at the moment.

      However,

for some reason google is show a search result for ‘Julianna Gonzales’ with a https. I have contacted Google to see if they can say why this is happening.

The site owner does not want to pay for an SSL cert with her hosts and I feel that if I change the site urls to https sooner or later an error message will be generated because there is no SSL cert.

I have checked through the site, settings, media urls in pages/posts, config, database, etc and everything I see is just https://juliannagonzales.ie/ – even media uploads.

Now I thought that I would just check and see if there is a way to run a test on my plugins to see if one of them might be generating the https?

Any help grateful for any assistance.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

  • With the plugin https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/ you may visit your site with some or all plugins deactivated, using the troubleshooting mode. That mode would only affect your session and won’t touch the experience of other visitors to your site.

Thank you Tor-Bjorn. That is a most useful plugin. Unfortunately I still can’t figure out if it was WP which changed the URL to https. I have contacted google and hopefully they will throw some light on it. The correct URL for the site is https://juliannagonzales.ie but search engines (google and BING) are showing https://juliannagonzales.ie so I guess the issue may be with them.

    Check your .htaccess
Check how you’ve registered the site in the webmaster section of these systems
Check that your html doesn’t indicate canonicals with https

Besides that, external pages might still link to https and that could be picked up by bing and google, too.

    Hi Tor-Bjorn
    Thanks for your response.
Unfortunately the site is completely HTTP and was registered as HTTP with Google and BING.
Every link, media, url on the site is http.
The site is self contained so I’m not sure where external pages would come into play.
    .htaccess doesn’t throw up anything
I have set up a good number of WP sites but this is the first time that one has thrown this issue.

I thought it might be a plugin creating the HTTPS but as I use most of the plugins on other sites and there hasn’t been an issue with them it must be something else.

    I will plod on.

A weird thing is that https actually works. It’s got a free certificate from Let’s Encrypt. The certificate expired on April 2, but if I tell Firefox to ignore that the cert is outdated, then everything works over https, too.

This means that the site probably has worked fine via https during at least 90 days, which is the standard validity time of a cert from Let’s Encrypt.

If anyone anywhere published a link to the site using https, then Google would have entered and crawled the site via this protocol, too.

You might check if you can update the certificate and try to add 301 redirects from https to http in .htaccess.
