I see there are many people who have struggled with getting Google Maps API keys to work with Events Manager, but most seem to end with “nevermind, I got it” or, alternately, with some legit fixes that just aren’t working for me. Here’s what I can say so far:

    1. I enabled the Javascript, Places, and Geocoding APIs
    2. I created credentials for the project
    3. I pasted the API key in the right place and double/triple checked that it was right
    4. I created http referrers restrictions, and when it failed, I removed those to make sure the pattern wasn’t the problem
    5. I started over with a brand new project, re-enabled APIs, created credentials, etc. to make sure I didn’t botch something along the way
    6. I waited overnight in case of delays from chron jobs needing to run, propagation, or whatever
    7. I disabled all plugins except Events Manager to make sure there are no conflicts
    8. I reverted to a clean 2017 theme for the same reason

All to no avail. The only thing I can possibly think of is that some threads mention a difference between a “server” and “browser” key, and I didn’t see an option to choose which I wanted. It looks like the Google APIs interface has changed since your (pretty thorough!) documentation was created, but I just can’t figure out where the controls are to try the different key types. Does this control still exist, and if so, how can I find it? Anything else obvious I might be missing?

  • It’s possible this is a conflict caused by your theme or another plugin. To check if it is, can you test with all other plugins deactivated and while running the default WordPress theme?

If that does’t help, can you post a link?

So for me — it turns out the location I was entering wasn’t able to locate.. I put in my home address and the map showed up just fine..

For me the issue was not putting in the full state name. Not using the abbreviated version (Washington instead of WA) did the trick for me. Hope that helps!

Thanks, that’ll probably help someone else. Google Maps can be a bit picky about addresses sometimes.

Let us know if that doesn’t help or if you’re still having trouble.

figured it out on my own. . . didn’t bother to reply because the suggestion to “disable plugins” and “use default wordpress theme” was already covered in my original post. later I figured it might be useful to at least note this. I get that there’s always a tension between vague unhelpful posts and overly detailed posts that have too much information, but I thought mine was pretty methodical and clear.

I was having the same problem until… I realized that my browser’s AdBlock Plus ad blocker was turned on for my site. I disabled ABP for the entire site, and voila! maps are now working.

So, having the issue myself now. Tried everything in the first post, and the other suggestions above (disable ad-block, use full state name) and it still can’t locate an address. Tried three different addresses and no luck.

I will note that creating the API didn’t look like what was on the tutorial. I was still able to use the HTTP referrers restrictions, so I don’t think that was an issue.
