Google mobile-accessibility issues
-
Hi Joe,
I’m using WP Accessibility on two different WordPress sites, both with the same theme. Earlier tonight, I got a Google Search Console warning that one of the sites has mobile accessibility issues. Using the Google Mobile-Friendly Test found that both sites have the same errors: “text too small” and “clickable items too close together.”
Since the tool is none too specific about where it’s seeing problems, I’ve been experimenting with turning different components on and off and retesting in an effort to isolate the specific problem the test is running into. To my surprise, it appears to be associated with WP Accessibility. When I deactivate that plugin on my 6200productions.com site and retest, the Mobile-Friendly Test says the site is mobile-friendly! When I reactivate the plugin and test again, I get the above-mentioned errors.
I have a different accessibility toolbar plugin, so I don’t use the one in WP Accessibility. The settings I have activated in WP Accessibility are:
- Remove target attribute from links
- Remove tabindex from focusable elements
- Remove title attributes from: Tag clouds
- Enable Skiplinks (with “Skiplinks always visible” unchecked)
I’m guessing the issue is with the skiplinks. It appears that the Google search mobile bot is unable to distinguish between the out-of-focus skiplinks and other site elements, so it says, “Whoa, that link text is way too small and jammed too close to other elements!”
Is there a way to resolve that? I would like to provide skiplinks for the benefit of screen reader users, but I’m worried about getting penalized by the Google overlords.
Thanks!
