Google not indexing custom meta description

For 3 months I’ve been tracking what Google is indexing on my pages. It is no longer picking up the custom meta description. Instead, it’s picking up the first content on the page. Why?
If you see Hi I’m MaAnna! in Google’s rich snippet, then it’s picking up the first text on the page. My meta description doesn’t have that.
I’m minifying everything via CloudFlare, which strips out the plugin comments in the source code, as well as the http part of the URLs that the Yoast plugin references. That’s not the problem, but may make it look odd to you, so wanted to explain.
