    Hi,

I recently did a PageSpeed test on my blog and after optimizing caching and image size, I still get significant bad results on loading tie.

Analyzing the results show that most of the speed loss is coming from the Instagram plugin.

I was wondering if the plugin implements any caching, image optimization or any other trick improving performance. If not, what would you recommend to speed up the plugin speed?

    Regards,

    Hi
References to the images are cached on your site for 2 hours by default. This speeds up your site massively.

What you are probably seeing here is that on mobile devices the images being loaded are too big and being scaled by the browser. PageSpeed does not like this – it wants the images to be exact for the screen size.

I would make sure that you are using the ‘size’ setting with the widget to choose an appropriate size image for your site. The smaller the better.

It could also be related to this bug: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/some-images-use-thumbnails-other-use-larger-versions?replies=8 which is being looked at. Some of the images Instagram are providing have irregular URLs which make them harder to resize consistently.

If you can provide a link to your site and your speed test results that would be a big help.

Better image sizes should be available to you in 1.9

    Hi Scott

The issue of using images larger than needed has indeed been fixed in 1.9, but PageSpeed is still complaining about items requested by the plugin:

    Compressing https://connect.facebook.net/pt_BR/sdk.js could save 118.6KiB (69% reduction).
    Compressing https://staticxx.facebook.com/connect/xd_arbiter.php?version=42 could save 21.5KiB (65% reduction).
    Compressing https://staticxx.facebook.com/connect/xd_arbiter.php?version=42 could save 21.5KiB (65% reduction).
Leverage browser caching for the following cacheable resources:
        https://connect.facebook.net/pt_BR/sdk.js (20 minutes)

I’m not sure these could be in your scope to fix, but thanks for your continued work on the plugin!

@coisosonthego None of those assets are loaded from this plugin. This plugin has nothing to do with facebook.com and does not enqueue JS assets.

    Hi Scott

I see… It’s just that those issues disappeared when I removed the widget from my page. Maybe Facebook is doing something behind the scenes?

@coisosonthego it wouldn’t be from this widget, it is not the way it works. There are many similar named widgets available for download so perhaps you have installed one of those?

I’m sure this is the plugin I use ??
I’ll do some more testing next week and will let you know.

Hey i’m having these same issues but i’m not using this plugin.
Please if you find out what is happening write me.
    I’ll do the same.
    Thanks!

@coisosonthego you can always browse the source code here if you want to triple check how things work: https://github.com/scottsweb/wp-instagram-widget/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=facebook

@lgfernandez91 @coisosonthego I would not worry too much about Google’s PageSpeed report. It is notoriously difficult to please and buggy too. Last time I checked fonts served from Googles own servers did not score very well. My guess is this JavaScript comes from some share buttons or another Facebook gadget/widget. The only real decision you need to make is are the ‘Likes’ worth the extra page bloat.
