For some reason the new Google Podcasts App does not play our SSP episodes. The old Google Play Music app handles them just fine, but in the Podcasts App we are getting an error –

Something went wrong This episode couldn’t be played. Please try again later.

This error occurs on every episode but one. It is possible to download the episodes to play them in the Podcasts App.

I’ve checked our iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn and Podcast Go feeds and they are all working fine, so this is apparently something related to the Google Podcasts App specifically.

    Any ideas?

  • Interesting, yes Jonathan your ‘WP Hacker Cast’ podcast plays fine. I also just reevaluated my podcast and surprisingly it is finally working!!

Unfortunately, I tried @samabuelsamid and @kimstuart ‘s podcast and both of those still have the same issue with not playing. The only change I recall that has occurred during the last 6 months is we moved our podcast content from Google’s GCS (Google Cloud Storage) to our VPS web services. This may have had an effect on how content was delivered as our own configuration for serving static content differs from the way Google does (caching, etc.).

Hope this helps someone on this thread.

Nice intro music ?? plays on the moto no problem.

We are using Vultr for our hosting, not sure that makes any difference.

Thank you to everyone for your feedback. This test seems to point to either an issue with the hosting of the audio files, or a bug with Google Podcasts.

I am working with @kimstuart to run some tests on their website, once I’ve been able to investigate some options I’ll feedback to everyone here.

Hello everyone, today I discovered that I have the same problem. This happens for the german podcast “Mit ohne Ahnung”.

A few words towards my infrastructure: The RSS feed is being hosted on https://mitohneahnung.de but the actual file hosting happens on https://backend.tobiasmaasland.de/

So that means at some point a 302 happens from https to http and no certificate is available. As far as I know such a redirect can be disallowed by browsers. Assuming the streaming engine is different from the download engine in Google Podcasts, this might be a clue towards why this is not working.

Also just to add this: I can see in the access.log within mitohneahnung.de that 4 queries against the page are made when I try to stream a podcast. But those are the same 4 queries so I suppose the app is re-trying. See the following row which appears 4 times, also see the 302 redir:

    [04/Apr/2019:15:31:44 +0200] "GET /podcast-download/109/5-olympia-1904.mp3 HTTP/1.1" 302 26 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (-my-device-; wv) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Chrome/71.0.3578.99 Mobile Safari/537.36 GSA/9.46.5.21.arm64" "mitohneahnung.de"

So for everyone who is hosting themselves: Is it possible that your infrastructure has also a mixture of secure / unsecure connections?

@knalla thank you for this feedback. It is very possible that this is the cause of the problem. I am still waiting on feedback from @kimstuart, who is going to try and test an audio file from another hosting source.

We seem to be experiencing the same issues. It would appear our feeds are working everywhere, except in the Google Podcasts application. I’ve tested on a Google Pixel 3, Samsung Galaxy, and a Note 8 and unfortunately, none of our episodes are streaming. I get a pretty basic error message that simply states the following:

“Something went wrong This episode couldn’t be played. Try again later.”

We currently host our files on Soundcloud and then use the link of the media file to generate our feeds. We are on WordPress Version 5.1.1 using the Bolden Second Line Podcasting Theme. Below are all of our live podcasts in Google Podcasts. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as we have had several reports of listeners not being able to access our content. If I can provide any additional details to help resolve this issue please let me know!

I will do my best to get to this tomorrow, I have been totally covered up since you and I spoke in email the first time Jonathan — will report back –

@kimstuart I’ve been following this thread for way longer than I’m happy to disclose and am heartened that you’re back on the case. I can reproduce this upon demand on a variety of Android phones in our device lab.

My daily driver is a OnePlus 6 running Pie. The podcast “The Livin’ La Vida Low Carb with Jimmy Moore” has, for example, always failed for me under all recent builds of Google Podcasts (currently at 1.0.0.200631462 with a Google version of 9.66.3.21.arm64).

As you run down the clues shared by others please feel free – should you need – to drop APKs for testing on a variety of manufacturers’ phones running Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo, and Pie.

I’m excited by the possibility of this one finally getting put to bed. [Edit: QE here.]

@psykro — Can you do me a favor and resend the last email with the URL in it, I’ve just spent about an hour searching for it and I cannot figure out where it went.

I’ll get it swapped out ASAP once I have it.

Ok, @psykro I’ve emailed you back with the details on the results and a couple of thoughts beyond what I’m adding in here for everyone else.

    ***********
It does stream from your hosting. The most perplexing part is that initially the Google Podcast app did stream from our hosting, but stopped doing so after about 3 episodes or so.

My process for adding the new audio is to FTP the files in, use Add from Server to put into Media Library and then put into episode using SS. Permissions are 644 rw – r – – r – –
    **********

    Couple of additional thoughts –
Any chance that the process or the permissions are the cause of the problem? Nothing changed from the beginning when it did work.

As to the hosting – we use Vultr (same as DO, AWS, etc) cloud with our own installation of WHM and cPanel, and we have our own IP addresses, so this isn’t like we’re stuck on some crappy EIG shared account.

    Thread Starter kimstuart

    (@kimstuart)

@dancouver – can you check permissions on your files on DO droplet and let me know what they read? We are on Vultr which is same sort of thing, so I’m trying to figure out if this is a permissions problem perhaps (ooh, try saying that three times quickly lol)
    Thanks!

I’m not sure that this is a permissions issue. I did some testing with the folks over at Castos. They helped me host an episode using a secure link HTTPS:// and that episode played with no issues in Google Podcasts. Our current hosting only uses HTTP:// for their hosting and all of our files with the HTTP:// header fails to stream, but still downloads. Even though our feeds are generated on our site using the Castos app and has an HTTPS:// header the feed redirects to the HTTP:// location of the file. I believe Google Podcasts is handling HTTPS:// to HTTP:// redirects in a strange way keeping our episodes from streaming. I don’t think this is an issue with the Castos plugin. If it was, none of our episodes would be working properly on other platforms such as Itunes, or Stitcher and at the moment, they are working fine. I believe this is an issue on Googles end. I’ve emailed Google Podcast Support three days ago and haven’t heard back. I’d encourage all of you to email them as well.

    AND THE MYSTERY IS SOLVED…
    @psykro @michaelsattler

@backpationet You, my friend, are a genius, even though you may not have realized it. The issue here is not a problem with Google, it’s the use of absolute paths for calling assets.

LSS, if you use the relative paths instead of the absolute paths in your episode URL, you should have no issues – at least as long as you’re using SSL on your site.

For us, we preload the episodes using FTP and Add from Server, then select the episode from the Media Library when we create it for publishing. So its just a matter of removing the domain and leaving everything after the first /

Apparently Google is treating the podcast episodes for the Podcast app in the same manner as if they were displaying content in an iFrame. However, https frames cannot serve non-HTTPS content, that’s against the rules and you get a blank display.

The part that clued me in was the reference by backpationet about the HTTP vs HTTPS, and I had a quick look at how our URL was formatted in the individual episode posts. Once I saw what I thought was the issue, I changed to relative path and voila! The episodes are working just fine in the Podcast app.

We initially had episodes, at least two, that were playing fine when Google Podcast app launched, so I don’t know if they changed something or if we changed something without realizing it. Oh well, it’s working now.

Hmmm….That’s very interesting. I have replaced one of my files using the relative name instead of specific. It is unfortunately not playing on any platforms now. So, that may not be the entire resolution but I definitely think it’s making headway. Ultimately, if Google handled its HTTPS redirection better it would resolve the issue for everything. Sounds like this might be a viable workaround for a few folks though!

However, I did just find out that while Soundcloud shows you an HTTP link for your hosted media. You can add the S, making it https:// and it will still function properly. I’ll try that and see if I can get my files to play in google podcasts! Really great work together everyone! ??
