Google Rich Snippets itemtype

I’m wondering how to change the Google Rich Snippet itemtype?

I am using the rating widget on an article and the itemtype is set as “product” but it should be “article”.

itemscope itemtype="https://schema.org/Product

How is the itemtpe determined and how do I change it??
