I have installed Yoast SEO and submitted the sitemap to Google Search Console. I am getting this error from Google: “Sitemap can be read, but has errors. Unsupported file format. Your Sitemap does not appear to be in a supported format. Please ensure it meets our Sitemap guidelines and resubmit.”

This is the sitemap URL: https://www.wordofhisgrace.org/wp/sitemap_index.xml

Your knowledge base says this is caused by running W3 Total Cache, but I am not using this.

It turns out that after extensive troubleshooting, I found that my WP installation had become infected with a backdoor trojan. This trojan was inserting a Javascript on every page, including the sitemap. The script created a cookie (for what purpose, I don’t know). Since this script wasn’t xml, it broke the sitemap. I found a script.php in the Inc folder that was the culprit. I deleted it, then reinstalled WP. This fixed the problem. The sitemap now validates, and I expect Google will crawl it soon and everything should be okay.

    I’ve marked this as resolved.
