    Hello!

Since activating & setting up the Google Site Kit plugin all seems to be well in the WordPress Dashboard. However, only when logged-in, the front-end of the WordPress site is showing “There has been a critical error on this website.”

Once I log out of the site, the critical error is gone. Also when logged out, I don’t see any GTM data or configurations from the plugin in the source code.

Hi @lstreng thanks for opening a support topic. The “There has been a critical error on this website.” message is a generic WordPress error. Can I just confirm that you are seeing this message on the front-end of your site and not in the Site Kit dashboard or settings?

If you temporarily disable the Site Kit plugin do you still get the error on the front-end of your site?

I’d also be happy to check your current setup to see if anything stands out here. I can do this if you share your Site Health Information. You can use this form to share privately.

If you are also able to capture this and share that would be very useful. You can use a service such as Loom to capture and share here.

Hey @adamdunnage, I can confirm that I am seeing this message on the front-end of the site (only when logged into WordPress) and not in the Site Kit dashboard or settings.

    • When I am logged into WordPress and the plugin is enabled, I’m seeing the critical error on the front-end of the site.
    • When I am logged into WordPress and the plugin is disabled, the front-end of the site loads normally.
    • When I am logged out of WordPress and the plugin is enabled, the front-end of the site loads normally.

I went ahead and filled out the form and provided Site Health and additional information.

    Thanks!

@lstreng Thanks for providing the above information that’s all very helpful. Can I ask if you get the same outcome if you switch your site theme to a default theme such as Twenty Twenty?

I’d also be interested to know if you have tried testing this with just the Site Kit plugin active? You can follow the troubleshooting steps here to do this which could highlight a possible conflict with Site Kit if there is one.

Let me know how you get on with the above.

Still looking into this and working on hunting down the logs to find more helpful information, but I have found the following:

    • Deactivating all plugins except Site Kit did not fix the error
    • Deactivating all plugins except Site Kit + activating a WordPress default theme (twenty twenty-two) did not fix the error
    • Reactivating everything back to the way it was and simply resetting Site Kit fixed the error

I’m not familiar with the Health Check plugin, however I did get it installed and deployed to live. When I went to enable “Troubleshooting” from it, it threw me an error “We were unable to copy the plugin file required to enable the Troubleshooting Mode.”

@lstreng Thank you for the detailed update. Since resetting Site Kit are you no longer facing this critical error?

    Wow, this is embarrassing.

Turns out the issue was a deployment to live gone bad. I went back in history and it turns out not all plugin files got deployed to the live environment for Google Site Kit.

I believe everything is working as expected. Thanks very much for helping out with this, that Health Check plugin could be very useful in the future.
