• Hi,

I’ve tried using the Google Site Map XML Generator but with no success ??

No matter how I do it (unzip, upload folder to plugins directory, activate, deactivate, change file permissions on two new files I uploaded, activate) it still won’ work ??

Can someone help give me a brief bulletproof list of things I should do to get it to work?

No matter what happens, I always get:

‘There was a problem writing your sitemap file. Make sure the file exists and is writable. Learn more
There was a problem writing your zipped sitemap file. Make sure the file exists and is writable. Learn more
The building process took about 0.01 seconds to complete and used 7.22 MB of memory.’

    Many thanks.

    Any ideas?
Many thanks for any assistance with this.
I have looked through the forums but to no avail.

Did you read the instructions that came with the plugin?

I believe most of them tell you that you need to create the initial files, and that the permissions need to be such that the web server can write to both files.

    Thats the bulletproof list.

Right inside the README, assuming this is the plugin you are using.

    == Installation ==

    1. Upload the full directory into your wp-content/plugins directory
    2. Use your favourite FTP program to create two files named sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz and make them writable via CHMOD 666. More information about CHMOD and how to make files writable is available at the [WordPress Codex](https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_File_Permissions) and on [stadtaus.com](https://www.stadtaus.com/en/tutorials/chmod-ftp-file-permissions.php). Making your whole blog directory writable is NOT recommended due to security reasons.
    4. Activate the plugin at the plugin administration page
    5. Open the plugin configuration page, which is located under Options -> XML-Sitemap and build the sitemap the first time. If you get a permission error, check the file permissions of the newly created files.
    6. The plugin will automatically update your sitemap of you publish a post, so theres nothing more to do ??

I did do that exactly ‘to the book’ and am still getting the same error:

‘# There was a problem writing your sitemap file. Make sure the file exists and is writable. Learn more
    # There was a problem writing your zipped sitemap file. Make sure the file exists and is writable. Learn more’

They were CHMOD’d to ‘666’ then I activate the plugin.
Went to Options -> XML-Sitemap and it showed me the two errors ??

    Any takers?

what is the url to the WP blog? The site in your profile indicates you already ought to be able to answer 50% of your questions or youre in the wrong gig. Its also not a WP site, so I hope im not directed to a site youre doing for pay — I personally, am not okay with helping ppl with gigs they’re getting paid for — maybe someone else is, Im not.

Nothing personal, I just figure that if someone is being paid to work, then they need to do the work, and if they cant do the work, then they need to pay someone else that can.

    Hi,
Thanks for checking out the site.

Hehe yeh, I’m in the midst of moving my portfolio site into a WP version, and it’s almost there.

It’s just a really odd problem that even following the instructions, it still doesn’t work out.

I’ll keep on working on it.

if its your site, Ill take a look. Thats not something youre getting paid for ??
