After a long, frustrating day trying to verify my site with Google Webmaster Tools, I finally uploaded a copy of the .html file to my host, which did the trick. In the interim, however, I pasted it into the header file of my theme. I put it in angle brackets, but it showed up at the top of the page anyway, and now I can’t get rid of it. I have pored over the header in the editor, which of course is how I put it there, and I cannot find the offending text in there anywhere. I changed themes, thinking that would solve the problem, but it did not. This is maddening. Here is the URL for the site in question: https://lefthandcopy.com/. I will appreciate any help.

Have you tried deactivating all plugins? Have you tried using a bundled theme like Twenty Fifteen|Fourteen?

Neither. Not to sound snotty, but I don’t like those themes. What is the point of using WordPress if I have to use a theme I don’t like. I’ll try deactivating all plugins. Thanks.

You don’t. ?? There are many more that would feel the same way. This is just a way to test. ?? If it is theme related then it makes things easier to pinpoint where the issue lies. ??

Well, that made it go away, but there was another snippet of text I also managed to get in there, and after I reactivated the plugins, that showed up. It disappears when I deactivate the plugins, but it comes right back on when I reactivate the plugins. No clue why it would have that effect. Thank you for the suggestion.

    Awesome! Great news!

So, what you can do is deactivate all the plugins and the activate one by one to see which one is causing it. ??

Damn! Why didn’t I think of that? Likely because it’s exactly the sort of tedious task I detest ;-). Thanks. I’ll get right to the tedium.

Oh, it was the Verify Google Webmaster Tools plug in, which make a perverse sort of sense, I guess. Thanks again.

Glad to see it worked out! ??
