• Hello!
    We’ve faced with a problem.
Tried to set up google tag manager 2 times (by Google Tag Manager for WordPress plugin and by attached code in header.php) – and come to fail.
It works for 2-3 hours and then the tag become inactive. The message is
HTTP response indicates tag failed to fire:
Status 404. This could be due to an empty or unpublished container.
But actually the container is not empty and it is published.
    Screen with container info
    Screen with the error
    Can you help us?

    Hi,

Sorry for the longer reply time, I was OoO last week.

I checked your site and and your GTM container seems to load with a HTTP 200 response code. Perhaps your issue is already resolved?

I also checked the site and GTM is loading fine but for anyone else who is experiencing similar issues, the reason for the Google Tag Manager unpublished 404 error is not related to the plugin in any way.

This error appears when you just created a GTM container and have not yet published it or when you have an expired GTM preview mode.

You may read the details in this article but the main idea is to publish your container (even if it’s empty) or for cases where the container is already published, exit preview mode and re-enter again.

This should solve the issue and GTM should load on the site.

I had a similar issue and initially I also thought that GTM4WP plugin was to blame but after a lot of debugging and reading I found out the solution.
