    Hi, I have all of my services through Google Site Kit connected and set to insert the code snippets, but GTM Tag Assistant says Google Tag: GTM-*MY TAG* not found. And also the GA4 measurement ID that shows up in GTM when testing Tag Assistant isn’t my GA4 ID. The only tag it finds is for Ads. I did a lot of the troubleshooting steps I’ve read in other threads, including using the health check plugin to disable all other plugins and nothing has worked. I’ve deleted Site Kit and reinstalled it. No idea what the issue is. Can someone please help? Thank you.

    Hi @pesac, thanks for getting in touch. Looking at your site I don’t see any Tag Manager code placed by Site Kit. It’s possible that you have the Tag Manager module connected but that something may be blocking or altering the Site Kit placed code. Could you first confirm and share a screenshot of your connected Tag Manager module in Site Kit.

    Could you also please share your?Site Health information. You can?use this form?to share privately if preferred. With this information I can check to see if anything about your setup stands out as to why this might be happening. Let me know if you have any other questions at this time.

    Hi @adamdunnage,

    See screenshot below. Container ID is triple checked confirmed correct. I just submitted the form. I don’t know if this has anything to do with it, but everything used to be connected fine, and I was messing around with tags and couldn’t get purchases to work right, so I decided to pause all tags. Then today I decided to try and get the tags working and unpaused them. I noticed right away that there was a problem with the container (text of error below). I tried troubleshooting with Tag Assistant and after pulling out a sufficient amount of my hair I posted here.

    @pesac Thanks for sharing all of the information that’s very helpful indeed. When you say you paused your tag, where did you do this? Was this via Site Kit or was it elsewhere?

    It’s also possible that there is a plugin conflict either blocking or modifying your Site Kit placed code. Looking at your active plugins I can see that you’re using the WP-Optimize plugin. If you temporarily disable this plugin do you notice any differences? Feel free to also let me know when you’ve disabled the plugin and I can check your site source code too at this stage.

    I paused them directly in GTM. I disconnected GTM from Site Kit and tried the GTM Kit plugin to insert the code and set up the datalayer but I had problems with the purchase tag, so I paused the tags in GTM, deleted GTM Kit, and reconnected GTM in Site Kit. Everything was connected fine still at that point. I didn’t notice any issues until I learned that I could still use tags in GTM while connected with Site Kit so I unpaused them.

    I have deactivated WP-Optimize. I looked for the tag again and it’s not there. Tag Assistant still says tag not found. I tried the troubleshooting method of using the health check plugin to deactivate all plugins but Site Kit and had the same problem, so I don’t know if the problem is related to other plugins but I’ll try whatever you suggest.

    @pesac Thanks for trying and sorry to hear that you’re still unable to see your tag. If possible, could you temporarily disable all plugins except for Site Kit? This would rule out any potential conflict. Again, I am happy to also check once you have done this.

    Could I create a staging site instead? Since my site is live I don’t want to deactivate everything on the live site.

    @pesac Absolutely! You can do this for the purposes of testing this. Please let me know the details once ready and I can perform some checks also.

    Ok I am going to have to work on this later. I will check back in soon once I have the staging site set up!

    @pesac No problem at all. Let us know once ready and I will be happy to help look at the site with you.

    @adamdunnage, I have a staging site that has all other plugins besides Site Kit deleted. I still am not getting the tag to show in the page source.

    @pesac Yes I see the same as you with the staging site. Could you try going to this URL which will create a temporary test WordPress site for you with Site Kit pre-installed. When setting up everything here via Site Kit do you encounter the same as on your own 2 sites?

    (@pesac)

    I set up Site Kit on that site and I was able to see my tag in the page source.

    On my live site I reset Site Kit in the admin settings and then set it up from scratch again. GTM now says container quality is excellent, however Tag Assistant still does not see the tag.

    @adamdunnage,

    I just created a php snippet myself for now as a workaround, so if you resume troubleshooting and see it that’s why.

    @adamdunnage,

    I may have found a lead. I set up another fake test site that only had site kit installed and it is having the same problem. I can only see the tags when logged in. If I open in incognito mode or another browser where I’m not logged in there are no tags. I didn’t check incognito using your tastewp link but I bet it would have had the same problem. I only checked with a logged in tab. This is the same site at the same time made with jurassic.ninja. No cache, no nothing. See below.

    @pesac Thanks for all the added information. I have also noticed on a few of my sites where Site Kit is placing a GTM code that when checking this site in the Tag Assistant picks up the tag but then when selecting it says Google Tag: GTM-P4HP**** not found. Is this the same experience as you?

    It may be that something has changed in the Tag Assistant but so far I am unsure but could you confirm that this is the current issue you are facing and we can then look further into this.
