Okay, so I went from a long 10magazine.asia address to a short and more memorable 10mag.com address. Great right?

Sure but we had built up a great reputation with Google and other search engines, with tons of links into our site and hence great SEO. People here know our site and we’re one of the first things people click on. How do I transfer the site over, but still maintain the reputation I had with the last site? Or do I? Am I better just sticking with the longer address? What do you experts think?

  • Even though I’m not an SEO guru, this one is easy. You want a 301 redirect, which implies “permanent”. Google (and its wannabes) will re-index you at the new site.

Here’s a whole slew of ways to do it. I use the .htaccess method, as I’m running on Linux. Nice and clean.

You can test your redirect with a 302, which implies “temporary”. This way, you can make sure your syntax is OK, and you can test all your old URL’s. And just make sure your site is working just right at the new URL – you don’t want broken links and stuff like that! Hopefully your site structure is identical, else you’ll need more redirects than the simple one.

If you’re trying this in .htaccess or the like, back up first! A mistake in that can bring your site to a grinding halt.

Maybe an SEO guru will weigh in as well, or you can ask at one of their forums, too.

    Cheers
