I previously purchased a theme which turns out was actually a child theme. I am needing to make some core changes to the theme but I don’t want them to be overwritten in the next theme update.

When i attempted to create a child theme from the current (child) theme, WordPress gave me an error saying that it was an invalid theme to create a child theme from.

I tried copying the theme folder of the current theme, renaming it, and editing the style.css header so it would appear as a child theme but when I activated it, the css was missing from the bulk of the site and I’m not sure why it didn’t carry over.

We need to create a child theme from the current child theme, but I don’t know the best practice on how to accomplish this.

    Ideas? Thanks in advance

You are right to try copying the theme folder and renaming it – but as to why that didn’t work is something that the theme developers should be able to help you with. It would be a bit unreasonable for them to expect you to hack the theme directly. They should have a safe way for you to make the modifications you need.
