Gray squares as thumbnails when uploading to Media Library

    I just did a brand new install of WP. I have no plugins installed and tried several themes. It seems random. Some jpegs appear properly, but most are just gray boxes. I tried reinstalling WP. I tried deleting everything (including the database), still to no avail. Uploads are being directed to the correct path, but are losing the .jpg extension. Any ideas?
