    I had a similar idea, although I couldn’t actually code it, so I just created a Customiser “proof of concept” visual to show what the editor interface could possibly look like. Perhaps your direction is the way that WordPress (possibly merging some of my ideas) should move into.

    Very cool!

    Integrating closer with the Customizer is something that’s been on my mind for a while. It appears that the upcoming Twenty Seventeen theme may deliver us a step closer to this way of creating a page.

    Building inside of the Customizer itself brings with it its own set of challenges, but is an exciting concept. This is near the top of my list of things to experiment with.

    Challenges yep! Maybe once the Fields API is integrated into WP.

    Fields API and Customizer will likely remain separate for the foreseeable future, but we’re working hard on both ??
