Great Plugin that EVERYONE should try

  • I have been using BPS (the free version) for many years, since when it was clunky and scary to use. When I had to clean up a friend’s outdated WP installation that was taken over by Turkish hackers back in the day, I realised I didn’t want to hand-code .htaccess files for security any more.

    I have not had a problem on any site since installing BPS. Yes I’ve temporarily locked myself out due to a bad .htaccess update, or a bad hosting service not being as compatible as they claim.

    In each case I’ve calmly checked the support forums and followed the help there. Normally I was back up within 10 minutes. I am not a coder.

    I have also never had to restore a backup due to BPS.

    I sleep better at night knowing I have BPS keeping an eye on the obvious stuff.

    Since the 0.52 release cycle installation is very straight forward. It is not a 30 second installation job. But if you read the instructions and follow the help it is not difficult. There is even a video you can watch and install along with. Put aside 10-20 minutes if you are a newbie and you should be fine.

    To the 3-star and less reviewers who are complaining that it seems too hard…

    If you cannot follow the easy installation steps in the current version you should not run self-hosted WordPress. There are many great managed WordPress hosting companies you should use instead or else pony up for WordPress.com premium. If you can’t work it out, or pay someone to work it out, you will get hacked which is worse for your business than the temporary pain of securing your website.

    Yep, BPS started out very clunky and scary years ago because we basically sucked as coders. Everyone has to start somewhere and usually that means you are going to suck at something for a while before you get any good at it. ??

    To the 3-star and less reviewers who are complaining that it seems too hard…

    Yeah, but we are pretty happy about the type of things in BPS that folks are complaining about these days and do not take it personally. Most are nick nack things that are actually very good improvement ideas for BPS so we actually appreciate the ideas and do them, but obviously not a low star rating. ??
