• My host has completely died, and now I’m looking for another host that let me use PHP and CGI scripts. The only problem is that I can only find a decent site that uses PHP but does not have a cgi-bin. Is it possible to import my greymatter files without the use of a cgi-bin, or at least create a folder with that name?

Also, can someone tell me where to download WordPress version 1.2? I can only find 1.5, and the greymatter import script doesn’t work.

  • I’ve tried the workaround, before ryan posted the new (1.5.1) version of the import script. It worked. Actually there is nothing to loose: the GM blog will remain there even if you import it, until you delete it.
The only concern can be that you have already posts in your WP blog, so the post ID#s presumably started at 1… and increasing; if in the GM blog there are posts with the same ID2 (i.e. 1,2,3…) there might be a conflict between those IDs.
However this is just a thought, because I imported the posts in an empty WP install, so I might be wrong.

thank you so much for the support… I am working right now to make sure I have the correct root paths …….I run into any trouble and may be posting again — but many thanks again for your support. It is nice to finally have a place I can ask questionsand receive a reply

i tried the brave version and it (seem to) run successfully. but i don’t see the imported gm files. am i missing something?

I just tried the importer bundled with WP 1.5.1.2 and I got nowhere. It runs and finishes and then this is the resulting page:

    he importer is running…

    importing users…
    Done
    importing posts, comments, and karma…
WordPress database error: [drop command denied to user: ‘[email protected]’ for table ‘wp_optionvalues’]
    DROP TABLE IF EXISTS wp_optionvalues

WordPress database error: [drop command denied to user: ‘[email protected]’ for table ‘wp_optiontypes’]
    DROP TABLE IF EXISTS wp_optiontypes

WordPress database error: [drop command denied to user: ‘[email protected]’ for table ‘wp_optiongroups’]
    DROP TABLE IF EXISTS wp_optiongroups

WordPress database error: [drop command denied to user: ‘[email protected]’ for table ‘wp_optiongroup_options’]
    DROP TABLE IF EXISTS wp_optiongroup_options

    Done

The greymatter import does not work correctly for the latest version of wordpress 1.5. I removed 1.5 from the server, cleared the mysql tables on the database, and installed 1.2. Unfortunately, neither the 1.2 installation nor its gm-2-wp import script work properly on the server. I tried the 1.2 install, because it seemed that many users have had success importing from gm in version 1.2 and upgrading to 1.5.

Is there ever going to be a modification or rewrite of the gm-2-wp import to work for 1.5? Are there any other ways to get around the import problem (I do not want to install random cms systems to import from gm and then import from the secondary cms into wp)?

Try the updated script posted 10 messages above yours. Specifically: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/31470#post-177664

I went and got it working with 2.0.1

    https://trac.www.ads-software.com/attachment/ticket/2464/greymatter.2.php?format=raw

download it, rename it to ‘greymatter.php’ and put it in wp-admin/import

Additional instructions for the above solution. With 2.0.x you need to disable generic pings by temporarily removing everything in Options->Writing->Update Services

I did everything bungeman recommended but for some reason the import always gets interrupted before it finishes – usually around post 200.
I’m running it for the 3rd time now and am keeping my fingers crossed because otherwise I really don’t know what to do…

    (@der_kleine_stowasser)

It stopped again. This is the error message I got:

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 2 seconds exceeded in /home/seepocke/public_html/blog/wp-admin/import/greymatter.php on line 218

Sucks, because otherwise the import was running beautifully. I guess I’ll try the workaround.

Ok, I worked around it like suggested. I installed 1.2, imported and then upgraded. That was so much faster than using any of the other suggestions here.
Thanks anyway and to newbies: don’t be afraid to do the 1.2 workaround: I had no clue what I was doing and got it to work.

    I used greymatter.4.php with WP 2.0

and I did get it right.
    thanks a lot.

    https://www.gps-info.nl/blog new
    https://www.gps-info.nl/weblog is the old greymatter

The .4 script works marvelously – once you understand it goes in the /wp-admin/import directory and runs through wp-admin (I only read docs as a last resort, sorry…) Thank you very much for the script!

I noticed it does not deal with greymatter’s {{link }}, **bold**, \\italic\\, etc. formatting syntax, is there any way it can be updated to do so?

A thousand or so entries is a bit daunting to attempt to manually correct; would be nice to have everything covered at once.
