Group Search on Extra Field

I would like to be able to search groups according to the custom field. For example, I made a field “zip code” for each group. But I notice the built in search for groups “Search by Name” only scans the database fields for Title and Description for each group. We do not want to just include the zip in the Title or Description b/c users are able to edit the group info. We would like the search to work on the extra field as well. Any suggestions? The Buddypress core code is pretty intricate for the search function.
