Groups don’t seem to work

I can create a calendar, some important dates, and assign some categories to those dates, but as soon as I add a group to the calendar, all the category colors go away. I assume that using groups is how one can create more than one calendar with different dates and display them on a website, but as groups seem to break the calendar, I guess this won’t work for us.
