• I often have guest bloggers and I would like their name to be displayed as the author. I have a plugin that can create and edit “roles”. I created a new role named “Guest Blogger” and did not give any privileges.

My question is, what is the best way to be able to display a guest bloggers name as the person that wrote the post, without giving them any privileges, etc.

  • You can also create a user account for them but never give them the login information. When you create the post, you can then assign them as the author, rather than yourself.

OK…I understand what you’re saying. A friend recommended that I set them up as a “Contributor’, and as you said just never give them the login information.

However, when I do that the new “User” doesn’t show up in the drop down list of authors when I’m doing the post.

    Thoughts?

Does this give you a better understanding of roles and their capabilities?

I already understand the roles and their capabilities, that wasn’t my question.

If people are saying that I can set someone up as a CONTRIBUTOR to have their name on the post, how do I get their name to show up in the drop down list as “author” when creating the post?

Perhaps I need to change the “responsibilities” of CONTRIBUTOR so that they show up in the Author list?

I think you have to give them author privileges.

Which privilege(s) will ensure they show up in the Author’s list? I don’t want to give them all the privileges or I could just give them the AUTHOR role, and that’s not the point.

Give them the Author role. They will be able to publish, You could edit that and add a foreword and may be reset their password(if needed) later so that they don’t get to access the site again.

I just tried giving them the Author role. That doesn’t work either. However, I have two others that I made Authors quite a while ago and they show up in the list.

Do I have to wait a little while for WordPress to process this?

Not really, It will be active, they just have to login and setup their details or their first name last name and preferred represention( just first name or just last name or both) etc.

OK…perhaps I didn’t explain this correctly. Here’s what a friend of mine does on his site…I want to do this:

“I manually setup an account for anyone that will have a guest blog post on there. I set them up as Contributors. The main difference between Authors and Contributors is the publishing capability. Contributors can actually log onto the site and manually enter their posts, but they can’t publish them. Authors can do everything the Contributors can, but they also have the ability to publish. I’d rather manage that piece myself.”

    How do I do this?

Well…I’m at a loss. I’ve set up a new user as an Author, but it doesn’t show up in the drop-down menu as an “author” of the post. I have myself (amdmin privileges) and 2 others that are Authors. The 3 of us show up in the drop-down, but the new guy doesn’t.

This is very frustrating. I’m hoping that I’m just missing something obvious.

I believe you are using the plugin and alongside you are trying to create a user from the user admin? Is it possible that the plugin is over riding the user settings you are creating in the user admin dashboard?

I’m not using any plugin anymore. I removed it.

But I still can’t get a new user to show up in the drop down list. This is very frustrating.

Are you able to create any other roles? could you try creating another admin user or any other role to see if it works. Could you also disable all your plugins and check if it works?

I can’t create any new roles without a plugin, can I?

Do you think that I have to login as the new user to be able to post as that person?
