Guide to solving search bar and “nothing found” error on homepage

I had the problem mentioned here and here where images on home page are replaced by a search box and the error “Nothing Found. It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help” though my site had previously been fine, something triggered it.
I wrote up the fix into a comprehensive guide to anyone else who comes across this.
