• Posted a post in Gutenburg using the classic format, updated some pictures save it, it’s ok, 5 minutes later, the Gutenberg lives his own life and change everything, constant annoying auto save, which is also freezing from time to time what means that everything you type is gone. import xml is like errors, has to format convert in to blocks waht also creating empty blocks which is very hard to delete etc etc etc

A lot of themes has their own gallery option with lightbox, you can only use that with classic format in Gutenberg, but when Gutenberg lives his own life it is terrible. The Gutenberg gallery itself has not even a lightbox what makes the Gutenberg Gallery not usefull, what does it have for value if you can create a grid where the thumbnails of the grid to small to see, you need a lightbox for that, but sadly Gutenberg gallery has nothing.

  • You are right the Gutenberg Gallery block does not support any lightbox behavior. But it seems there is also something else going on, which feels a lot like a plugin conflict.
You could install the Classic Editor and use that for your old (= pre Gutenberg) content editing.

There are a few dozen Custom blocks plugins available in the repository, who push further on the photo gallery. I think it would be worth to try out some of them and see if they do a decent job for your new galleries.

In an ideal world Themes shouldn’t provide you with additional functionality, that normally would belong into a plugin. So in the long run you might need to research for a Gutenberg compatible theme.

I know there is a lot of ifs and maybes, if you just want to get your work done, stick with the Classic Editor for a while, until your theme developer can catch up with WordPress 5.0. There wasn’t really a lot of time available to get this done earlier.
