• Just a question – any idea why the War on Drag n Drop continues? Yeah, I have a bold statement, I think the leadership is purposely not implementing drag and drop or it is implementing it in a way that is not user friendly.

Any person would expect to see dragging elements from the Inserter, working with drag and drop on customizing the site-wide elements like the footer, widget area and the header.

So far none of that happens.

There was also a good idea of re-arranging the elements based on the Page of Elements menu.

Even the elements that are draggable are not labeled as such, nor the mouse cursor changes when it is over them. A normal and regular person wouldn’t even know that some elements are draggable.

Why is this war on drag n drop continuing and isn’t it time for the community to request a big fat revision of that damaging policy?

There’s definitely not a war on drag and drop, there have been some improvements to it in recent versions. What version of Gutenberg are you using?

with drag and drop on customizing the site-wide elements like the footer, widget area and the header.

This isn’t part of Gutenberg, so this seems more of a general WordPress criticism. Within Gutenberg there’s a Full Site Editing feature in development (viewing this requires a theme that supports the feature like the ones part of theme experiments—https://github.com/WordPress/theme-experiments), and this will allow drag and drop between areas on a site.

There are also plans to update widgets and menus with block-based editors.

Block insertion, navigation and reordering frequently borders on unusable in all but the simplest layouts. The moment any nesting such as cover blocks or groups with columns it’s almost impossible to accurately place an existing block as the insertion indicator gives no indication of the block you are actually on.

The drag a drop behaviour and handle has changed repeatedly which is really confusing for users too.

It’s an incredibly frustrating experience and an area I’ve seen virtually no improvement, I would even say has regressed over the last 6 months.
