Hello @thehaobospatula,
Gzip compression support is controlled by the hosting providers, Hummingbird can only detect if it’s currently active, or not.
For instance, in case of wordpress.com hosting plans, it looks like Gzip is not enabled, and you can’t simply enable it via the server configs:
https://wordpress.com/support/php-environment/
I’d suggest to ask the hosting support, to make sure if it’s available and can be activated.
As an alternative to using Gzip, you can connect your site to CloudFlare, which offers Brotli compression:
https://wordpress.com/support/cloudflare-cdn/
Brotli compression can be enabled in CloudFlare dashboard, from Speed >> Optimization >> Content Optimization:

Please note, that Hummingbird can’t detect Brotli compression yet, so even if it is enabled, no appropriate message will be displaying in Hummingbird >> Gzip Compression about it. Our developers are working on adding Brotli detection in future versions.
Hope this helps. Let us know if you have any further questions!
Best Regards,
Dmytro
