Short version: My website has been hacked multiple times. My host has told me what files are bad, but I don’t know where files are stored or how to access them. Help?

Background: I set up a website in 2012, until a few months ago it was a simple up-to-date wordpress site, I logged in using domain/wp-login, no issues. It got hacked and started showing some ED pill stuff. It has since been hacked every day or so, and I can’t log into the admin anymore (the entire site seems to be gone).

My host is 1&1 Ionos and they have been sending me auto-emails about each attack, along with a list of bad files, but I have absolutely no idea what FTP or any of the other stuff the emails mention mean (as in I don’t know that I even have FTP stuff, nevermind how to “log in using my primary FTP credentials” as the emails suggest). I also can’t figure out how to just nuke the whole thing and start over, or how to save what I can and then nuke it.

I’m just feeling completely lost here and hoping someone can point me in the right direction, preferably using very simple words. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Ideally our host should be able to answer these questions for you, but short of that, there’s a guide on here explaining what FTP is and how you can use it: https://www.ads-software.com/support/article/ftp-clients/

Get a fresh cup of coffee, take a deep breath and carefully follow this guide. When you’re done, you may want to implement some (if not all) of the recommended security measures.

If you’re unable to clean your site(s) successfully, there are reputable organizations that can clean your sites for you. Sucuri and Wordfence are a couple.

    Fatals,

I have wordfence installed on my site.

There is a free and paid version. Both are great and I never had a problem with hacking.

You could also contact them (wordfence) to help you clean your site.

They provide this service for a fee.

Then, as Steve said, Sucuri or Wordfence is a must to keep your site safe.

    Good luck!
