I’d like to know if there’s a way to hack the login procedure so that users are taken back to the home page instead of to the Dashboard or Profile page. I am using the Hide Dashboard plugin and it may make more sense to hack the plugin than to hack WP.

The reason is that I have a client who wants two subscription levels. The immediate plan is to make one level able to see private pages and another that can see private pages as well as private posts. It’s a private organization and they want to create just one user name & password combo for each level rather than having to create hundreds of individual user accounts. So, they don’t want the users to be able to change the profile settings. Also, it’s a bit confusing to some people when they arrive at the dashboard or profile page. They don’t know what to do there and it’s not obvious how to return to the user side of the site.

    Thanks

I now have Weasel’s Login Redirect plugin alongside Role Manager and have the redirect working the way I want it to, i.e. after logging in the user is sent to the site’s home page instead of the dashboard or profile page.

The only glitch is that there is still a link to Site Admin which would allow users to mess w/ the profile, but I guess I’ll have to live with that and reset it if someone messes with it. Ideally I would like to hide that but it seems like if I remove my Meta widget from the sidebar the redirect stops working.

So, Weasel’s Login Redirect doesn’t *completely* hide the back-end, but it comes pretty close.

Thanks Otto. I’ll check it out.

In the meantime one more thing that has come up is that I’ve noticed that even when logged in, users who have permission to see private pages don’t see the links to those pages, and people who have permission to see private posts can’t see the post categories unless there is something else in the category that is marked public. This seems like a bug. Users who have permission to see certain content should also be able to see the links to that content.

Actually I was wrong about the Weasel plugin. If you log out from the admin side you don’t get the redirect. If you log out from the user side, you do.

I really like Weasel’s plugin. You can create custom URLs to take people directly to private pages that do not appear on the site, or to any page you want a particular person to go to upon login, including category pages, tag pages, any page that you can supply a URL for. For example:

    https://yourdomain.com/yourwpfolder/wp-login.php?redirect_to=/yourwpfolder/?page_id=XXX
