Handling custom taxonomy

I’d thought about custom taxonomy while making the plugin but since I don’t currently use them myself they weren’t added at the start. It’s something, like the author stats, that I’ll have to experiment with and see if I can add it. Another great idea! I’ll aim to have something for custom taxonomy added by the next update, if it’s just for the main page at first there will be more separate pages to go along with the tags and categories soon.

I’m really pleased that people are able to use the plugin and find it useful. So thanks again for your feedback, knowing that there are people out there using the plugin means a lot to me.

Custom Taxonomy just added to the latest version (3.0.29). After updating the plugin go to the “Settings” page and turn custom taxonomy settings on and select which one you’d like to view. After doing all that the custom taxonomy should be listed under the tags in the Post Volume Stats menu… it has it’s own page!

Please let me know if this works for you. Needs tidying.

Happy new year! Thanks for this update. I just tested it. Indeed, through the settings of your plugin I can add a custom taxonomy, that will show up as a submenu of Post Volume Stats.
On that page, I can view the number of posts per custom taxonomy item… but when I select them all and hit the ‘preview’ button or the ‘show HTML’ it doesn’t work (whereas it does for categories and tags).
See the attached picture:

Hmmm…. the preview uses a JavaScript file to load the data into the graph. This time I forgot to tell it explicitly that there was a brand new file to load, so I think that might be the problem. Can you try doing a “hard refresh” or clearing your browser’s cache, then restarting browser and trying again please.

If not, what browser/operating system are you using? I’ll take a look on some different WP sites over the next day or so.

Also, thank you for posting the screenshot. It looks like you have a lot of users who do not post. I’ll have to find a way to specify the type of users who create posts so that your “author” bar chart can look a bit better.

You were right, clearing the browser’s cache made the trick!
I’d also appreciate an option to exclude the authors who do not post anything.. It would definitely make my graph look better.
This relates to a question I had for you: does your plugin collect data from all user roles? In my case, I have a bunch of contributors who by definition do not publish any post.
Also, it would be nice to include the custom taxonomy pie chart in the Posts Volume Stat main submenu (once the option is selected by the users).

Another suggestion, maybe a bit out of your plugin’s scope.. Would you consider including other post statistics? For exemple, number of images / tweets / videos embedded, number of comments … I could come up with a bigger list if you’re interested ??

With this latest update it was almost all about the custom taxonomy. I’m not sure how many people use custom taxonomy so next update is going to be something that hopefully everyone will potentially use… the exports!

There will definitely be a pie chart on the main page with the custom taxonomy data. I would have done it this time but I’m streamlining the code at the same time and it would have been a bridge too far. Next time! I’d also like to neaten up the custom taxonomy text, e.g. making the name in the menu the proper title, as opposed to the slug.

With some of your suggestions there are more than one way to add them to a post (images and videos) so if I added that I’d just have to make sure that it worked for everyone, whether they’re added through the media library or if someone adds them manually. So, I’d say yes, great idea, but I need to look into that some more. I call these “quality metrics” and I’m definitely going to add some of them in the future.

Comments are another good one, I can see them being added soon.

Here’s what I’m planning for the next few updates…

• CSV exports.
• Finish custom taxonomy.
• Author settings.
• I have an idea for the main page that should be interesting.
• The first quality metric might be the number of words per post as EVERYONE uses words.
• Re-structure the pages.

It’s good to know that it’s not just me with an interest in stats. Any and all feedback is more than appreciated! Thank you!

Just installed the new update.. It works great! It even already includes the word counting ??
Your plugin is really a powerful and useful tool to manage a multi-author website!!
In our case, we’ll use the data you made accessible (and even more with the csv export, as well as the ‘quality metrics’) to greatly improve our NGO!
So, in the name of teachers and children using our website everyday I’d like to deeply thank you! By the way, I couldn’t find a ‘donate’ button on your website to express our greetings ??

Thank you very much, it makes me feel great knowing that the plugin is useful. When someone is being this nice I feel that I should tell you the stuff that I’m unsure about at the moment, haha. So here it is…

For the recent additions, author and custom taxonomy, I’d just say that I’ve tested them a little on my test sites but it’s difficult for me to test those on bigger “production” sites as I don’t have any production sites with multiple users and custom taxonomy. The authors in particular was a bit fiddly, so if you see any bugs please let me know.

Also, words per post… this may not be exactly the same as the word count number you get on the admin on the post editor, but it should be close. I’d like to count the words in the same way WordPress does so that chart matches exactly, this will hopefully be soon.

I can add something that counts people with “author privileges” who have/haven’t posted but I found through testing that you can assign a post to a contributor. So, even though a contributor should not be able to create a post, there can be contributors with posts assigned to them. I’ll make a note of this for future updates, I imagine having a percentage of users who post might be useful too?

Another long reply from me ?? FYI, I may be busy with other stuff for a month or so, plus I’ve updated loads recently, so it might be a few weeks before I can do any more.

I’m marking this as resolved even though it wasn’t a question, because unresolved questions seem to be fixed to the top.

Seeing as I’m posting… you should be able to have more than one custom at a time with the next update. With the testing I’ve been doing that seems like it would save time.
