Have to add a "category" menu item below a "page" to give access to posts

If a visitor to my site wants to see something I’ve posted to a certain category, I have to have a menu item with that category name. I want them to be able to click on a menu item that takes them to a page with the same name as the category to see the posts, but right now I have to put the category into the menu as a sub-item to the page menu item.
I can’t find a way to associate the category with the page or the page with the category.
This ought to be easy but I don’t know what I’m missing.
