• Right now I’m running wordpress 2.0. I want to update to the latest release which i’ve downloaded.

The way i usually do this which never works is i upload the new version via ftp to my server but i run into problems with the wp-config.php file. I never know how to tweak that so the new site works with the new version. Please help me,

    thank you

The wp-config.php file should remain unchanged. It will be exactly the same between 2.0 and 2.2, unless you made some really odd changes to it.

    As for the whole process:

There doesn’t seem to be a wp-config.php file. I need this before we can get started. Need more help? We got it. You can create a wp-config.php file through a web interface, but this doesn’t work for all server setups. The safest way is to manually create the file.

this is the error i always get and never know how to fix it.

If you had wordpress up and running before, then your wp-config.php file should already be in the old file system. When you upload the new files, it won’t be overwritten – it’ll still be there and still be used.

if you deleted all the files (including the existing wp-config.php file) before upgrading, then you have to create it yourself. Open up the wp-config-sample.php file and put in your connection settings, and save it as wp-config.php. Upload. Done.

let me explain this very clearly. i have done this dozens of times (tried to upgrade) and i get stuck here and no one will help me. I’ve tried to figure it out but i’m completely 100% stumped.

I need baby steps through this and once i do it one time i’ll know what to do. I haven’t blogged in over a year because no one is nice enough take the time out of their day to help me. they just throw and link at me and i can’t do it. i need baby steps just for this part. if someone would be kind enough to do it i would be eternally grateful.

    ther4 –

I’ve had the same experience. I’m hosted at AT&T-Yahoo and they only install 2.0.10 at this date. Updating to 2.2 creates nothing but trouble for me. I see you are at GoDaddy. I don’t know what their help section is like, but maybe they would be of more specific help for what you are trying to do. I’m NOT knocking this forum or WordPress, it’s just that each situation has a best responder. I’ve given up on AT&T-Yahoo for help and set my updates to ‘manual’ so they don’t do something odd while I’m not looking.

I guess I’m not understanding your problem. There was a wp-config.php file in the wordpress directory before you ftp’d the files over, correct? That file should still be there, unless you deleted it. WordPress does not include a wp-config.php file, that’s specific to your setup alone.

And now I am doomed. In the last 2 hours AT&T-Yahoo upgraded to 2.0.2 and reset my upgrade options to ‘automatic’. I reset them back to manual, but I’m obviously not in control.

I have themes and plug-ins that depend on certain settings, like the WP version. Not good.

Well you’re not “doomed” — you just have to move to a decent webhost. Why stick with a company that offers such shoddy service? You’re free to take control anytime you want.

I’m with Otto – I don’t understand the problem either. If you had WordPress running before, then you already have a wp-config.php file with the correct settings. If you didn’t delete it, it certainly wasn’t overwritten, and should still be there. As for “baby steps” see my post above, I can’t get any more clear than that.
