Have you considered extending the plugin to global VAT/GST? VAT/GST laws around the world are pretty similar, so most of the functionality needed is already in your plugin.

    Hi Hans,

    Good afternoon!

In fact, all the work inside the plugin to enable this was done a while ago. It’s now just a matter of adding any specifics for a particular region (the country list, exchange rate provider (e.g. suitable ‘official’ bank)). Is there a region in particular that you wanted support for?

    Great to hear!

My company is New Zealand based, but the customers are spread around the world. I should be under the tax thresholds for other countries for now, but that’s likely to change at some point. The USA, Canada & Australia would be the most likely countries I’d hit the sales tax thresholds for.

Is it the sales tax threshold only that interests you as a feature, or others too?

The USA doesn’t have VAT, it has sales taxes.

Once you’ve started crossing the tax thresholds for different countries/states, obviously you’re going to need a way to charge the right tax amount for each region, and then help collating the data needed to submit the tax returns and pay the right amounts.

The USA doesn’t have VAT, it has sales taxes.

… and in NZ we call it GST. They’re all a form of “consumption” tax, with similar rules.

I may have to register for VAT soon. Is the plugin currently able to handle NZ GST? I currently have NZ GST set up manually using WooCommerce’s basic Tax zones. I’d need NZ customers to see NZ GST, and UK/EU customers to see the correct VAT rate, including on invoices (I’m using the PDF invoice plugin that you recommend).

Ideally I’d be able to collect non-contradictory evidences for NZ GST too.

Does NZ have a website or API somewhere where you can check whether given GST numbers are valid?

Not that I know of. There is an IRD number validation service, but that won’t tell you if a business is registered for GST or not.

In NZ businesses usually pay the GST, and then claim it back in their GST return.

Some companies do accept a GST number to remove the GST. So, there does seem to be a way to validate the number.

All I’ve managed to find is an IRD number validator: https://www.ird.govt.nz/digital-service-providers/services-catalogue/customer-and-account/ird-number-validation

And, the checksum algorithm for IRD numbers: https://github.com/InlandRevenue/Gateway_Services-Access/blob/131dcac268fa9cecf339ad15bcc43da3d8ffc24f/Identity%20and%20Access/IR%20Number%20Validation%20Modulus%2011%20Digit%20Check.md
