    That depends of the theme you use. Either you can:

    – add your header image in the theme’s settings, under Appearance > Theme settings. Be warned, some themes don’t have it

    – or you’ll need to upload your header online, and modify your CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) to include your image as a background image to the header. On WordPress.com, you need to pay a small fee to modify your style sheets.

    I sometimes pick themes based on theme settings being available for ease of use.
