    To find out what font is used somewhere you can use What The Font Its pretty good at giving an accurate result and gives a link to where the font may be purchased.

    To add a gradient to a graphic you need to learn the basics of photoshop. – look for some of the many free photoshop tutorials on the web or sign up for a lynda.com (or similar)

    Alternatively (for fonts where the license allows embedding) you could use wp-cufon for a custom font on the site id in the masthead Cufon enables a gradient to be used without any graphics. A couple of example of where I have used wp-cufon to style the site ID on a couple of my sites:
