Header image per category

I’m sure I’ve seen this (as code somewhere or as a plugin) : how does one display a header image depending on a category listing or the category of a post? so that for all posts relating to cats I get a cat header, otherwise I get a standard header. Yes I’ve seen the random header plugins… that’s not what I want! Any advice welcome. thanks.
